The Giant Anteater (aka "Ant bear") of South America actually dines mainly on termites. A formidable creature, it has few enemies except for anacondas, crocodiles & caimans, and adult jaguars, although some of these big cats have been mortally wounded by the anteaters! An adult giant anteater averages around four feet long and may weigh nearly two hundred pounds!! The claws (aside from self-defense) are used mainly to break open termite mounds, then licking up the crawling insects with a sticky 40" tongue!!
